Proud To Be A Thrifty Girl

Sing to the tune of “I’m Proud To Be An American” by Lee Greenwood.

If tomorrow all the things were gone

In spendy retail stores,

And we couldn’t buy a thing

Brand new anymore,

I’d thank my lucky stars

For my thrifty tendencies

Cause I’d still be out shopping

For secondhand accessories.

And I’m proud to be a thrifty girl

Where at least my stuff’s half-free.

And I won’t forget the people at home

Who sold their crap to me.

And I’d gladly drive up

To their house and buy their junk again,

‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love used things.

Goodwill is my best friend!

From the clothing racks at Savers,

To Salvation Army’s aisles,

Across driveways in America,

I can spot deals for miles.

From the many ads on Craigslist,

And curbside free junk days.

Well there’s pride in every thrifter’s heart,

And it’s time we stand and pay.

‘Cause I’m proud to be a thrifty girl

Where at least my stuff’s half-free.

And I won’t forget the people at home

Who sold their crap to me.

And I’d gladly drive up

To their house and buy their junk again,

‘Cause there

Think About it Thursdays: Are You a Frugal Fashionista?

As a  child, my dad and I would go garage saling in search for the best deals.  I would come home with all sorts of things – cds, books, games, toys, jewelry – but there is one thing I wouldn’t go near: clothes.  I loved buying everything else secondhand in good condition at outrageously low prices, but no matter how much my dad tried to persuade me to look at the clothes, I wouldn’t budge.  Boy, am I kicking myself now!  Now that I am buying 100% of my clothes I realize how expensive they are.  I wish I could go back because buying secondhand clothing would have saved my parents a good amount of money (sorry Mom and Dad!).

Even after I started hitting up stores like Goodwill and Savers for decor items during the past year or so, I still would steer clear of the clothing.  Over time, however, I started to realize that making money isn’t easy and although I like clothes, they are too expensive to buy brand new at full price or even sale prices.  I asked myself if the clothes I was buying were really worth full price when I could buy equally nice clothes

My Semester Pledge + Thrifty Finds

I am back at my apartment for school and have decided I need to change my spending habits.  After buying my digital SLR camera I realized I like to buy things, and although I think I am better at not spending my money on frivolous things than a lot of people my age, I can still do better.  San and I have promised one another that we will only go out to eat three times together over the course of the next three and a half months.  Even though we both love to cook (he is in the food business and graduated from culinary school as a pastry chef), we are tired on the weekends and go out to eat instead of making food ourselves.  This adds up every week and is unnecessary, so we’re cutting it out.

I have personally pledged to buy as little as I can from retail stores.  Instead, any clothing, home accessories, cooking items, etc. will be purchased second-hand from consignment stores.  San and I like to walk around stores when we spend time together because it is free, but in reality, it causes me to splurge on things I don’t need, and when I say

Incredible Weekend Finds

This weekend I was feeling very crafty, which called for some shopping that led to some incredible finds! I have a lot of crafts to share in the next couple of weeks, so I’m very excited! In the meantime, here are some of the cool things I found this weekend.

Last week, two of my favorite bloggers (Bryn and Jenny) blogged about Daily Drop Cap, a website with amazing decorative initial caps posted once every day. That compelled me to buy this when I first saw it at Marshalls for $7.99. Maybe it was a little more expensive than what I would normally spend, but considering it was pay day and it was totally awesome, I gave in and bought it. It now sits on my desk but also can be
