Picnic-Inspired Valentine’s Day Tableau

I had a vision of the perfect Valentine’s Day over the weekend that would work for a romantic dinner for two, a plentiful meal for a large family, or even as a buffet-style dinner for a Valentine’s Day party.  Seeing as I’m a Minnesotan, I have had just about as much as I can take this winter, and the snow doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon, in fact it just keeps on falling every day.  All the snow had me dreaming of a summertime picnic filled with bright, happy colors, and warm rays shooting down from the sky.  Unfortunately, unless I’m willing to have a picnic full of frostbite, this vision will not be able to become a reality for at least a few months, but I decided to create a Valentine’s Day tableau that involves bringing the outdoors in.

I started it all out with this quilt (which is over 50% off right now), but I imagine many people have a quilt or blanket of some type they could use to drape over the table.  I suppose you could even do it in the

Two Craigslist Finds Turned Fabulous: Inspiration Board

With all the snow around me and all the extra time on my hands since I don’t go back to school until the beginning of February, I seem to be feeling a little down that I can’t spend much time outdoors.  All this winter makes me truly appreciate the spring and summer.  I decided to catch a few moments of springtime happiness by creating a spring-inspired dining room inspiration board which includes the two main pieces of the room (the table and buffet) found on Craigslist.  I wanted the room to feel completely feminine, fresh, and happy with lots of bold bright colors.

I started with this great solid wood buffet for $150.

The Best of Inspiration – 2009

This past year I have completely changed one aspect of my life.  I have always been obsessed passionate about decorating, but I had decided many years ago that there was no point in immersing myself in these things until I had a house of my own.  Well, I realized that was ridiculous because it is something I love.  I decided to look around, find inspiration, and just see where it led me.  If you haven’t noticed yet, it led me to blogging which is now something else I am very passionate about.

I thought I’d delve into my inspiration files and share some of my favorite photos that I found this year.  Now, before looking at all these, I want to preface this by saying that these photos are not the most amazing rooms I have ever seen.  I have seen some gorgeous rooms that I could add here, but the photos I normally save to my inspiration files are rooms I think I could actually incorporate into my home in the future, or ones that I could take elements from to recreate.  I see plenty of rooms that are spectacular, but that do not look like “home” to me and

Christmas Living Room: Two Ways

Remember when I posted about my favorite Christmas color schemes, blue/silver and purple/gold?  I decided all the inspiration pictures were fun to look at, but I wanted to do something more with them.  I picked one of my favorite pictures from both color schemes and designed a living room around them.

The blue/silver color scheme led me to pick more glamorous decor.  I wanted the blues to really pop, so I stuck with whites and silvers mixed with an occasional pop of dark wood as the neutral accent colors.  I designed it around this Christmas tree from Canadian House and Home.

Here is the fully decked-out blue Christmas living room:

I started with this fabulous Montego navy pennyback sofa.  I loved its clean lines mixed with the tufting to make it feminine and masculine, and oh so glam.  Next, I wanted a rug to ground the room.  I didn’t want anything too dark because I didn’t want to take away from the tree or the already dark sofa.  This fleece rug did the trick.  I

I’m Dreaming of A Purple Christmas

Last week I posted about blue Christmas decorating, but I’ve decided that blue is not my only favorite Christmas decorating color.  No, I have visions in my head of another kind of Christmas color scheme.  The blue, when paired my favorite way, with white, reminds me of a more contemporary Christmas with bright silver lights everywhere and remakes of classical Christmas songs playing in the background.  My other favorite color around Christmas time is a purple-y plum which reminds me of something completely different.  With plum colors, I think of candlelight, hot chocolate, and jazzy Christmas songs playing with golden light filling the room.  It’s a more classical Christmas color, but still removed from the traditional reds and greens.  Purple can still look contemporary like the blue can as well, but it’s very versatile.

Here it is as a more contemporary color (I suppose I consider it more contemporary if the purple is mixed with anything but a green tree):
