Think About It Thursday: Do You Care What Others Think?

After I shared my new chalkboards and room reveal on Monday and showing my chalkboards to my roommates, I realized that I care what other people think a lot less than I once thought when it comes to how my own spaces look.  However, when I think of my future home I usually first think about how it will make me feel but then think about what other people will think about it.  I’m not sure I would ever not decorate a certain way because someone not living in the home wouldn’t like it, but I think I would take a second to let it cross my mind.

All of this had me wondering, however, if you care what other people think when it comes to decorating.  Of course, if you are married or living with someone else, of course you are going to care at least slightly what the other person or people think because they share the space with you.  But, do you care what your friends think when they stop by?

Think About It Thursday: Where Does Inspiration Come From?

If you ever ask a writer where they get their inspiration from, many times they will reply something along the lines of, “I usually base my inspiration on experience and part of it just comes to me.”  I think the same is true in the decorating world, at least for me.  If someone asked me where I draw my inspiration from I would tell them from lots of research and exposing myself to many things, but at the same time I have a vision in my head of the overall “feel” I would like my future home to have.

It was strange, one day I was looking through various Etsy shops and I stumbled upon a Ranunculus Mini Set by saranorris.

After yesterday’s post I think it’s safe to assume you all think I should be committed due to my obsession with Ranunculus flowers, so it seems obvious that I would love these photos.  However, the strange thing is that when I saw those photos I thought to myself, “That is what

Think About It Thursday: What Defines Our Style?

In the past six and a half months since I began blogging on a regular basis, I have seen my style morph into something much different than it has ever been before.  I suppose I never took the time to ask questions such as, “What about this room appeals to me?  Do I like the curtains/layout/color scheme/etc.?”  Whatever the reason, I have witnessed first hand my tastes move closer toward the eclectic and vintage and farther from the high-end, beautifully matched design styles of Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware.  Of course, I still like certain pieces from these stores, but pictures like these found in their catalog galleries I would not choose to live in for myself.

Before my blog, I probably would have found these room to be very attractive with their matching deep-stained furniture, but I would never choose these room as favorites now when I compare them to the hundreds of others saved in my own personal inspiration files.  These rooms are not

Think About It Thursday: Americans and Leisure

I have been philosophizing lately.  Don’t worry, it’s not too scary because I have a professor guiding the philosophies I’ve been philosophizing about.  I’m taking a higher-level English course that deals with literature and Christianity and the interplay between the two.  Earlier this week, we talked about how genuinely good art is important for Christians to incorporate into their lives because it touches the soul on a deep level and lifts a person’s heart to God.  If you think about it, it makes sense that art would lead a person to God because it ponders the mysteries of life and things human experience cannot explain.  I’ll try not to become overly philosophical on you, but this basically led us to discuss how, in general, Americans do not value leisure and many times do not make time to enjoy the arts (paintings, operas, plays, concerts, literature, etc.) which is one way that a person can ponder and ultimately strengthen their faith.  In the United States, the value seems to be placed on working, working, and working some more until the point where a person must retire or dies.  When you think about it, it’s kind of sad and scary, but it’s

Think About It Thursday: Why Do We Love Black and White

I don’t know about you, but I love color.  I love pops of blues and greens, maybe sprinkle in some pink.  I envy a room with crisp whites and bundles of colorful joy in little nooks and crannies – just enough to make you swoon.  However, I also am obsessed with the lack of color and all colors combined (i.e. black and white).  What is it with these colors, or I suppose I should call them shades, that makes people go crazy?

I mean, take black and white photography for example.  If The Pioneer Woman says something is great, you better listen, and she says black and white photos are like fries, once you have one, you need to have them all.  Look at some of the finalists from her black and white photography contest.

Explain to me why a rose is beautiful for its gorgeous color, but can be just as gorgeous (maybe even more so in some way) when it has no color at all.  I don’t understand, but sure enough, I’m swooning just as much as you are looking at this
