Angle It Up with Your Photography

The more I practice taking photos, the more I learn, and ultimately the more I want to share with you.  One big rule when it comes to photography is to be creative with your angles.  As I went out to take some flower photography this week, I decided to have fun with this rule and see what I could come up with.  Luckily for me, my Nikon D5000 has a screen that flips out and rotates so I can take photos from some pretty interesting angles (although I prefer looking through the viewfinder whenever possible).

Here are the flowers I was working with.  They actually sit right in front of the window in my parents’ exercise room so I get an amazing view of them whenever I’m running on the elliptical (talk about inspiring).DSC_1976Now, I haven’t gone into any detail editing these (some I didn’t edit at all), but I just wanted to show you how creative you can get when shooting photos from different angles.

No Frills Flower Photography

You know what I love most about flower photography?  I love how the photos can have no frills – no fancy textures or special effects – and they still look pretty, because flowers are pretty!  They make me so happy (on plates, comforters, notebooks, calendars, and growing outside, too) that I barely retouch my flower photography because I usually like them just the way they are (that and I’m lazy I don’t have a lot of time to mess with them).

Here are some of my no frills flower photos:

A Piece of My Peony Photography

I set out on Tuesday to take some photos of all the flowers blooming in my parent’s backyard.  Boy are there some gorgeous flowers!  I went outside around one o’clock which was perfect because there was an overcast so no direct sunlight was coming down creating harsh shadows.  A little later it started to storm, so I got lucky.

I plan on sharing the photos in pieces because there were many I was very happy with.  I want time to play around with the editing on them, so today I’ll just share the peonies I took photos of.  There were only two that had bloomed fully.

All I did with these was tweak the levels and the color in a few clicks.  I really would like to buy the student edition of the most recent Photoshop because my Photoshop 7.0 does not support the hundreds of free actions that are out there.  I’m too new to know what

Photographing the Death of Nature

Although I was ecstatic to purchase my first DSLR camera this past winter, I realized that the photography I love most and look forward to trying the most is done outside in beautiful summer weather (or summer weather in Minnesota when there is no snow on the ground).  I don’t get a chance to practice taking photos while I am at school, but this winter and this past week while I was on a break at home, I got a chance to photograph nature.

Around my school flowers have been planted and color is starting to abound from all the brown and white desolation left over from the winter.  I was hoping my parent’s yard would look the same, but without the luxury of professional gardeners and small grassy areas, the yard at my parent’s is turning green but that’s about it.  It’s beautfiful, and for this time of the year when we many times still have snow, I cannot complain, but as a person who was looking to photograph some color, I was a little dissapointed.

There is a lesson to be found, however, even when photographing dead plants in the middle of a stark winter or at the beginning of

Dreaming Of: The Perfect Camera Bag

Now that I am an avid user of a Digital SLR camera (a Nikon D5000 to be exact), I have been hankering for not only new lenses (or just one new one for now), but also for a more roomy and cute camera bag.

When I bought my camera, I added on an inexpensive kit that included this camera bag:

It does pretty much all I need it to do right now, seeing as I usually don’t go anywhere, so I don’t need to take my camera with me, and I only have the kit lens that came with the camera, so I don’t need any extra storage.  This little carrying case will always be useful when I am on the go and only need one lens, but I plan on purchasing a new lens in the near future and will want more storage, as well as for papers, filters, my point and shoot camera, as well as room to grow.

Here are some options that meet my camera bag requirements that it must be cute and have organized space
