From Rust to Chalk & Major Room Reveal

I am excited to finally show off my room looking the way I’ve wanted it to all school year!  You already saw the photo grouping last week and may have seen the room tour I wrote about when I first moved in last September.  Trust me, it’s come a long way, but without spending a lot of money and by being creative and settling with what I can afford.

What really makes the room, in my opinion, are the little details that I made myself (which you will see further down).  The ultimate project I couldn’t wait to finish was a pair of frames turned into chalkboards.  I initially thought I was going to use this huge round mirror I posted about a while ago to paint and turn into a chalkboard while painting the wood it’s on a fun color.  I quickly realized that it was too large to fit anywhere, the mirror was glued on and a pain to remove, and I then decided I wanted a magnetic chalkboard while refusing to use magnetic paint, which meant I had to buy metal to paint with chalkboard paint.

Luckily, I only paid a small amount for that mirror and was given

A Banner That Will Make You Smile

I felt that my room needed something else to make it feel more “complete.”  I wanted to do something crafty that I could hang on my walls which are still a little bare that would bring color and happiness into the room.  I decided to make a banner to hang above my window.  I was inspired by Kate’s thankful banner and Meg’s peace banner.  I had first wanted my banner to say “Imagine” because it is something I’m doing all the time and it is a variation of “dream.”  I decided it would be too long, however so I chose “smile.”  The word smile makes me happy and I thought it would help to remind me to not get overly stressed out from school.

I gathered my supplies and I got to work.  I used glitter, tacky glue, white ribbon, a sponge to spread the glue with, scissors, five sheets of thick scrapbook paper (not the flimsy kind), scissors, and a large sheet of tagboard.  I picked out colors that would work both in my room at my apartment but also at my room at home.  I try to make sure I can reuse everything during the summer when I am

Create Your Own Book of Possibilities

Have any of you seen Queen Latifah in the movie Last Holiday?  It was an okay movie, but what really inspired me more than any of the scenes or acting was a prop in the movie.  Queen Latifah’s character, Georgia, has a book that is a collection of all the things she wants to accomplish during her lifetime.  She cuts out magazine pictures, glues her head on to the pictures, and then documents what the pictures show and what she wants to accomplish in the future.  She calls it her “book of possibilities.”  I loved this idea and ventured out to make one of my own.

I headed to Target to buy a scrapbook kit.  I ended up buying this vintage kit for $24.99.  It had everything I needed and looked perfect for what I wanted.  I liked that it was vintage looking since I plan on having it the rest of my life.

Instead of tearing apart magazines to glue onto the pages, I instead went to stock.xchng, a free stock-photo website, and searched for photos that went along with what each of my goals were.  For example, one of my goals is to have a family, so I found a

Getting My Craft On – One Flower At A Time

Looking for some super cute artwork? I found this great tutorial at Living With Lindsay. She seriously has some of the best tutorials. I want to recreate everything she does! I loved this project so much that I pretty much recreated it with dollar store frames and all. I have not put any paper behind them yet, but may in the future. I also would like to cut out some of my green polka-dotted fabric to make leaves. Here is the project from start to finish:

Polka-Dotted Inspiration

I have created a super simple tutorial for creating a fabric covered bulletin board on a budget. The obstacle I faced was that I did not want to spend money on fabric that was going to be permanently attached to a bulletin board because the colors of my apartment are different than my room at home with my parents. I also wanted to make something else out of the fabric at a later time, so I had to find a way to attach the fabric without permanently fixing it to the cork.

I started with a fairly large bulletin board and one yard of this green polka dot fabric I got from JoAnn Fabric and Craft Store. It is a home decor fabric, so it is thick and very
