Sunday must have been my day because not only did I finish my room and chalkboards, make a great spaghetti casserole, and think of a great idea for a cheap spring decorating accessory (more on that later this month), but I also scored some great shoes at amazing prices.
San and I decided to stop by the local Goodwill, more to kill time than to buy anything. When I walked in there was a huge section of brand new Target shoes. Not only were they cheap, but they were so cute. I would have probably bought a pair for full price at Target because I liked them that much, but instead I snagged four pairs!

Okay, so I bought three pairs in the same style, but I seriously love them! I love wearing flats, but I have a problem with them cutting into my heels making them unwearable. These are a soft suede that does not cut into my heel and they have a great hard rubber bottom making them great for random Minnesota weather. I also bought the tan ones because they also will not cut into

I am excited to finally show off my room looking the way I’ve wanted it to all school year! You already saw the photo grouping last week and may have seen the room tour I wrote about when I first moved in last September. Trust me, it’s come a long way, but without spending a lot of money and by being creative and settling with what I can afford.
What really makes the room, in my opinion, are the little details that I made myself (which you will see further down). The ultimate project I couldn’t wait to finish was a pair of frames turned into chalkboards. I initially thought I was going to use this huge round mirror I posted about a while ago to paint and turn into a chalkboard while painting the wood it’s on a fun color. I quickly realized that it was too large to fit anywhere, the mirror was glued on and a pain to remove, and I then decided I wanted a magnetic chalkboard while refusing to use magnetic paint, which meant I had to buy metal to paint with chalkboard paint.
Luckily, I only paid a small amount for that mirror and was given

Before I left to go back to school for spring semester, I thought up a new arrangement for the room I was coming back to in my apartment. I didn’t like the old arrangement with the bed against the window (it was cold during the winter) and wanted it against a wall so I could easily sit and watch TV from it. The walls were pretty bare as well, so I wanted to make it feel more like “me” with a picture grouping on the wall. Because it is hard for me to go shopping while I am at school due to the lack of a car, I bought the frames I was going to use while I was at home at Walmart and a dollar store and schemed up a picture grouping by laying everything on my bed. I ended up changing a lot once I got to school and came up with this:
I liked the symmetry of this arrangement and the inclusion of the paper flower art I made a while back but didn’t have a good spot for at the time. The

I am back at my apartment for school and have decided I need to change my spending habits. After buying my digital SLR camera I realized I like to buy things, and although I think I am better at not spending my money on frivolous things than a lot of people my age, I can still do better. San and I have promised one another that we will only go out to eat three times together over the course of the next three and a half months. Even though we both love to cook (he is in the food business and graduated from culinary school as a pastry chef), we are tired on the weekends and go out to eat instead of making food ourselves. This adds up every week and is unnecessary, so we’re cutting it out.
I have personally pledged to buy as little as I can from retail stores. Instead, any clothing, home accessories, cooking items, etc. will be purchased second-hand from consignment stores. San and I like to walk around stores when we spend time together because it is free, but in reality, it causes me to splurge on things I don’t need, and when I say

Have you ever noticed how sometimes what you think is the root of the problem is only half of what is wrong? I learned that this week when I started to spruce up my bedroom bookcase. When I would walk into the room, I thought the arrangement of the stuff on the shelves was the problem with my eye being drawn to the bookcase, but I was very wrong. I styled the bookcase the best that I could but I learned that some serious rearrangement needed to occur to fix what was wrong with the room because the real problem was that the bookcase just didn’t belong where it was. It looked like a dark void the second I entered the room and even the world’s best shelf organizer couldn’t repair it in the way it needed.
But, before we get too far into it, let’s look at what I picked up on my thrift/bargain shopping extravaganza. I headed to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Savers, Dollar Tree, and Walmart. My original plan was to fill the shelves with decorative baskets to add texture while also hiding the books and making the bookcase seem more fit for a bedroom. I was thinking something
