Think About It Thursday: Americans and Leisure

I have been philosophizing lately.  Don’t worry, it’s not too scary because I have a professor guiding the philosophies I’ve been philosophizing about.  I’m taking a higher-level English course that deals with literature and Christianity and the interplay between the two.  Earlier this week, we talked about how genuinely good art is important for Christians to incorporate into their lives because it touches the soul on a deep level and lifts a person’s heart to God.  If you think about it, it makes sense that art would lead a person to God because it ponders the mysteries of life and things human experience cannot explain.  I’ll try not to become overly philosophical on you, but this basically led us to discuss how, in general, Americans do not value leisure and many times do not make time to enjoy the arts (paintings, operas, plays, concerts, literature, etc.) which is one way that a person can ponder and ultimately strengthen their faith.  In the United States, the value seems to be placed on working, working, and working some more until the point where a person must retire or dies.  When you think about it, it’s kind of sad and scary, but it’s

Revamping Recipes: Baked Cheeseburgers

What’s better than a casserole (or hotdish as we say in Minnesota) and better than a cheeseburger – you probably guessed it: a cheeseburger casserole, or this recipe called Baked Cheseburgers.  This recipe is perfect for a family but also perfect for a girl like me who likes to make one delicious meal a week and eat it everyday to save money and time.

DSC_0258 Ingredients:

8 slices bread
3 tablespoons butter, softened
1 lb lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped (I skipped this)
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
2 tablespoons ketchup
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup shredded sharp processed American cheese (I used mild cheddar)

This was almost a perfect ingredients list because I had just about everything on hand.  It was a lot of bread to get rid of at once, but bread is cheap, so I didn’t worry too much about it.

Picnic-Inspired Valentine’s Day Tableau

I had a vision of the perfect Valentine’s Day over the weekend that would work for a romantic dinner for two, a plentiful meal for a large family, or even as a buffet-style dinner for a Valentine’s Day party.  Seeing as I’m a Minnesotan, I have had just about as much as I can take this winter, and the snow doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon, in fact it just keeps on falling every day.  All the snow had me dreaming of a summertime picnic filled with bright, happy colors, and warm rays shooting down from the sky.  Unfortunately, unless I’m willing to have a picnic full of frostbite, this vision will not be able to become a reality for at least a few months, but I decided to create a Valentine’s Day tableau that involves bringing the outdoors in.

I started it all out with this quilt (which is over 50% off right now), but I imagine many people have a quilt or blanket of some type they could use to drape over the table.  I suppose you could even do it in the

Obsession Alert: Antique Dressers

Earlier this week, I posted about my thrifty finds I purchased while doing some shopping at consignment stores.  My favorite stop was at an amazing consignment store selling furniture, purses, clothing, and home accessories called Kismet Consignment* located in Rochester, MN.  If you live in the area, you must check out this store if you haven’t yet.  My mom scored two large framed beveled mirrors for About $70 for the pair – what a deal!

The reason I’m sharing this is because I found an incredible piece of furniture there that I’m now obsessed with.  It was a tall dresser with two smaller drawers on top separated by a slab of marble with a small mirror in the middle.  My mom and I believe it had been a man’s dresser where he would keep his watch and would wash his hands and face in the morning in a washbowl.  I have no need for this kind of furniture (or any furniture for that matter) right now, but, you know me – I sure am dreaming about it!

If you have been following my blog for a while, you probably know that I like vintage/antique pieces mixed in with more modern ones.  I
