…But it’s a good thing!
You see, these images keep popping up in my browser of amazing dining rooms and in-kitchen dining areas that use something a bit more unconventional than chairs. Benches seem to be a great alternative to matching dining sets and I am definitely on board to try this out…that is, as soon as I have a dining area!
Here’s some inspiration photos. Try to pay attention to how these can work in every style of home.
Whether they are built in or freestanding, these benches make a statement and turn even the most elegant room into something cozy that invites gathering and conversation. I find benches to be the perfect alternative for someone who may not want the uniform look of matching chairs but at the same time don’t want all their chairs to be mismatched. Throwing a bench in to the mix allows for different fabrics, colors, wood tones, etc. to come into the room without being too startling or planned. They are also perfect for kids who love to cram themselves right next to other people and also love anything out of the ordinary. I grew up with my mom always having a settee against the wall but pulled up the the round kitchen table. I never thought anything of it then, but now I have realized how innovative and creative that really was! Props to you, Mom, for inspiring me!
What do you think – would you like to be benched?

I have an IKEA table with two long benches. With kids it’s great. For adults I hate them. I’m always embarrassed when we have company over because it is so difficult for adults to get in and out. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if the bench was only for two and they could move out from the side, but ours is built for three. Definitely only one bench on one side, so that for those who prefer chairs, they have the option.

I love benches/settees they are one of the most useful pieces of furniture because they are so versatile. Great for moving around when you have company. For dining I like benches with a back to them because it is comfortable. I like two person benches because you can get out on either side and I like them paired with chairs. I recommend having a bench around the house you will find many uses for it! great article, some of those benches are really fantastic!!!
Beautiful inspiration pictures :-)
I love the look of a dining table with chairs and a bench. It adds visual interest with the different shape, as well as the opportunity to use finishes on the bench that are different from the chairs.
Thanks for checking out my kitchen makeover. I’m in love with those tiles too!! :-)

I love benches! I have an antique bench behind my farmhouse table – it’s a great way to soften a dining area with too many hard surfaces. Pile it with cushions and pillows – or use an upholstered bench, and you get a whole diferrent feel to your eating area. Great post – thanks!

I’m with Dana – great for kids but kind of a pain for adults. They do look great and are good for saving space. You found some amazing inspiration photos.
