Obsession Alert: Art is Dance, Dance is Art

Over the weekend, I went to the state dance competition to support my old high school’s dance team.  I was on the dance team in high school and made it to state my senior year.  Dancing at state was one of the best days of my life.  For me, dance entered my life and quickly entered my heart.  It was a rigorous sport (yes, it is a sport – I will challenge anyone to that, so please don’t even get me started on it) but it was also an art in that it invaded my very being.  I have never been the same since.  I still go to as many competitions as possible to not only support the team but to immerse myself in something I am still incredibly passionate about.

There really is something so captivating about dancing that lifts a person’s soul in the way that most daily tasks cannot.  The mixture of movement, rhythm, and music seeps into one’s blood and makes them float across the floor.  Performing was my favorite, which is odd to me, because I do not normally like to be the center of attention.  When I was on the floor, something in me burned and I was free to be more myself than I feel I had really ever been before or have been since.  It’s a silent way of committing myself fully to something and showing people exactly who I am, at least in some way.

I sure miss it, but part of me finds comfort in not still taking part in it by surrounding myself with things that remind me of it.  For instance, in my room at my apartment, I have two dance-related pieces of art.  One is a water color ballet print.  It is gorgeous!  It makes me so happy every time I look at it.

image I also bought this vintage dancer on a dictionary page print which is framed in an arrangement I have yet to post about because it is not finished.  It is so fun, and definitely adds a vintage feel I love.

image I have quite rapidly become obsessed with any art that is related to dance in some way.  I am dreaming of it hanging in a huge arrangement in a little girl’s room or in a craft room.  Maybe even in a dance room (opposite a wall of mirrors, of course) if I ever become lucky enough to have the space!

Here is some more Etsy dance art that I would love to add to my collection:

How could I not add this one?  It’s such a cute version of the hugely popular “Keep Calm and Carry On” print.

This is just a small taste of the amazing dance art there is out there.  I just looked on Etsy because my style is so varied that I would be looking on tons of different websites if I hadn’t stayed on one diverse website.  I don’t know how I’m ever going to stick with one style of decorating when I have a place of my own – it’s so hard!

Do you have an obsession with a type of art?

Dance is so beautiful it is hard for a lot of us to know just how hard the dancers have to train to make it look so effortless! I do not have a specific art style however, I do tend to love older impressionists paintings, but I also really love some photographic still life art. It just depends on the piece. Dancing art is one that I like alot.

Absolutely LOVE the water color ballet print! Even though I’m not a dancer (two left feet) I enjoy watching it and am drawn to the art. Back when I first began quilting I went to a big quilt show in Paducah, KY, where the AQS is headquartered. The quilt that placed first in the pictorial wall quilt division was “She comes in colors” by Charlotte Warr Anderson. You can see a photo of it here – stunning!
