ODE TO STUFFING
The turkey is roasting.
My toes, they are toasting.
By the fire I wait
For you to appear.
With my nostrils held high,
I sigh a big sigh
While the chatter of family
Draws near.
Small talk surrounds me.
They talk so profoundly.
Yet my hunger pains
Drown out their songs.
I’m sorry, I swear
But your talk can’t compare
With the love I’ve been
Hiding so long.
It’s ready! I cheer!
I see you, my dear
As we line up to eat you and
Your brothers.
I trip little Sally
And elbow darling Allie
To get to you before
Any others.
Your heat rises and rises.
The whole family surmises.
What the heavens is wrong
With that child?
I say, "Don’t you worry,
I’ve just got to hurry"
When I’m starving I really
Get wild.
I’m sorry, I lied,
I already ate the pumpkin pie.
I couldn’t get you off of
My mind.
But when you’re on my plate
We’re on our own special date.
My family disappears when
You’re by my side.
I mumble a prayer.
I’ll make it up, I swear.
I have to get you on to
My spoon.
I’ve waited all year
For you to be near
So I take a bite
And I swoon.
I cannot contain,
"What’s the point?" I exclaim,
To keep quiet about you
All these years.
Dear stuffing you’re mine!
You make Thanksgiving divine!
If I couldn’t have you
There’d be tears.
I’ll try to never eat
The knocks-offs of you on the street
So far I have never
Been caught.
But when I’m alone
On those nights on my own
Don’t be mad when I reach
For the Stove Top.
Until next year, my friend
When we’ll make amends
And we’ll keep our small tradition
Every fall.
I can’t wait until 2010
We’ll see each other then
Happy Thanksgiving
To stuffing-lovers all!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today I am thankful to be able to share my love of all things domestic with all of you, for my family and friends, for all the food I am lucky to eat not just every year but every day, and the biggest blessing of life I was given twenty years ago. Give love to all those around you and give thanks for every small and large blessing surrounding you. You are lucky to be a alive, we all are, so let’s eat and be merry! I hope to have pictures of my Thanksgiving feast posted tomorrow.

What a wonderful poem! I think you should start a poem book or club you are talented at them! I love stuffing too, should make it more but I don’t. Maybe you could get your poem published in magazines?
