A Custom Way To Display Your Photos and Jewelry

After deciding to completely revamp my bulletin board, I quickly got started planning what I would do with it.  I drew up a sketch, headed to a craft store, and got to work!

I started with some dark brown burlap, a spool of thick white ribbon, a spool of thin white ribbon, and some white thumb tacks to match the ribbon.  That was basically all I needed to create a one-of-a-kind corkboard.

I started by drying the burlap to get any wrinkles out of it.  Then I covered the entire board with the burlap and tacked it to the back.  You could use staples, too, but I already had plenty of tacks.  Then I took the thin ribbon and tacked one end to the back and stretched it diagonally across the board and pinned it to the back on the the opposite side.

I then switched directions and weaved the ribbon under and over the previously laid ribbon.  Note, this picture has an error, the ribbons going horizontally should be weaved in opposite ways so there are no two consecutive ribbons going over or under.

I only wanted to use the ribbon on the top half of the board, so once the ribbons hit the middle point, I just tacked them on the front and later cut the ends off.

Once I had finished weaving all of the ribbon and tacking them to the back, I took out my thick ribbon and laid it across the tacks in the middle of the board.  I laid two of them over so that you could not see through the thick ribbon and tacked them to the back. Then I used the remaining white tacks to use on each intersection of ribbon as well as to secure the strip of thick ribbon along the middle.  This allows each picture or paper to stay put exactly where you put them without sliding behind the ribbons.   Once the front side was finished, I flipped it over and trimmed all the excess burlap and the ends of all the ribbons.   Here is the front: I hung it on one of my sliding closet doors.      Then I added pictures and other various personal touches. You can use the bottom half for anything, but I decided it would be a nice place to hang jewlery and accessories on.  I used regular clear tacks, the kind that have a piece the sticks out farther than thumb tacks do, so all the jewelry could be easily hung.  I hung necklaces, bracelets, and scarves for a custom jewelry display.  the nice thing about burlap is that after pins have been pushed into it and taken out, no holes are left because burlap is much more loosely strung than normal fabric. For a little time and money, I created a custom picture and jewelry display board.  If the time ever comes when I do not want to hang jewelry on this anymore, I can easily remove the tacks and use the bottom half for something else without leaving any holes.  This project is so easy but the results are fabulous.  No one can guess that I made it myself, and for only a tiny amount of money!  I love the versatility of corkboards and really love that I was able to choose colors to match both my room in my apartment and my room at home.

Have you recreated a corkboard or some sort of message or picture display?  They are very trendy right now and incredibly fun to make as well as affordable.  It’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon and try it for yourself!

I really like this. It also could be used as art for the wall if you did not use it for pictures and jewelry etc. Nice color combo. I can see how it would be easy to see all your jewelry and pick out exactly what you want to wear. Great Idea!
