Like many children of great cooks, I grew up in my kitchen. My mom would cook and I would either help her or sit at the counter and talk and talk until meals were served. I have spent more hours in the kitchen than probably any other room in my house growing up. The saying was true in my house that the kitchen is the heart of the home.
Along with spending lots of time in the kitchen, I have been obsessed with decorating and house-related things since “Mama” and “Dada” came pouring out of my mouth. I have spent many years of my life planning out what my future home would look like, and most importantly, what kind of cabinets I would have in my kitchen. My mom has always loved deep cherry cabinets in kitchens, so that is what I am used to. They bring warmth into the room and are also very classy and elegant. I have spent a good amount of my teenage years bashing white cabinets for being “too cold” and “sterile” while my mom told me that while she wouldn’t have them herself, she could see why people would like them. She also would always remind me that white shows everything and is hard to keep clean. I was certain all of my homes would have deep chocolate cabinets if I had any say in the matter. Case closed.
Well, fast forward a couple of years when I have had time to delve into the decorating blogosphere and I am sitting here hitting myself because, I have to admit that I actually really like white kitchens. I never thought it was a possibility, but now I have seen how beautiful they are and I’m kicking myself for hating them with a passion for so long! Many of my favorite bloggers have white kitchens: Meg @ Whatever, Kate @ Centsational Girl, John & Sherry @ Young House Love, Nicole @ Making it Lovely, and Stefanie @ Brooklyn Limestone to name a few. I think they have persuaded me without even intending to and now my whole world is upside down.
For the past year I have added pictures of white kitchens to my inspiration folder saying, “I’m only adding this because I may one day change my mind, but I highly doubt it,” or, “I like parts of the kitchen other than the white cabinets.” But, after stumbling across Kraft Maid one day to look at cabinets and seeing this photo on their main page:
I knew my whole life had been a lie. Of course I am exaggerating, but I realized that all this time I have secretly been in love with white cabinetry without letting myself admit it. I love every single thing about this kitchen and I couldn’t say “Oh, it doesn’t have to do with the cabinets” when it is obvious that it does. I have decided to come clean to all of you as my way of coming out of denial and heading toward acceptance while also showing some of the pictures that helped mold me into the white-kitchen-lover I now claim to be.

Aren’t they just gorgeous? I have found that I am drawn to lighter paint colors which looks beautiful against white cabinets. I still love the dark stained cabinets, so I think I’ll have to compromise when I do eventually get a house and maybe have an island with the dark wood or the white painted cabinets depending on what the main cabinetry ends up being, so I get the best of both cabinet-worlds.
I have to say, even posting this, I feel like I let myself down a little because I had been stuck on dark stained cabinetry for so long that I feel like I am betraying it. Is that strange? Tell me, have you ever been against something when decorating, or anything domestic-related, and then suddenly found that you love it? What did you do about it? Did you stick to your old ways or did you set your pride aside and adopt your new love?

Absolutely stunning kitchens! I can’t even pick a favorite! I’m so glad you’re starting to come out of your denial and even beginning to accept and embrace your love of white kitchens! :)
All the kitchens you show are beautiful. I notice most of them combine color or darker floors or a combo of dark and light so it breaks up the white. White definitely makes for a brighter kitchen where the darker seem more cozy or warm. Both are beautiful to me it just depends on How you live and how you want to live. How you live probably is the biggest determination of the design of your house. Since a kitchen is probably the biggest expense of any house it is important to spend a lot of time on the design and materials to be used for it. You won’t be changing it very often.
